An den hinteren Mahlzähnen ist die mesiale Fläche nach vorne gerichtet - zum vorderen Nachbarzahn, während die mediale Fläche zum Gaumen gerichtet ist. An den Eckzähnen, die zirka um 45° zur Mittellinie gedreht sind, ist der Begriff medial nicht eindeutig. Dagegen ist die mediale Fläche eindeutig definiert - sie zeigt zum jeweils weiter vorne stehenden Zahn.”
