Die neuhochdeutsche Form Reisig entstand durch einen Wandel der unbetonten Endsilbe zu -ig. Insgesamt handelt es sich bei diesem nur im Deutschen vorkommenden Substantiv um eine Kollektivbildung mit dem germanischen Suffix -ahja- zu einem althochdeutschen Substantiv, das dem Neutrum Reis zugrunde liegt.
