Jahrhundert das ältere mittelhochdeutsche Wort vēh „vielfarbig“ ablöst, und zunächst ein reines Klosterwort war, welches eine schwarze Stickerei auf weißem Grund bezeichnete. Die weitere Herkunft des Wortes bleibt unklar. Es wird vermutet, dass es vielleicht auf das Lateinische ' „Stich, Stechen“ zurückgeht.
