Jahrhundert existierte das althochdeutsche Verb lesan, aus dem sich das mittelhochdeutsche lesen entwickelte, was für aufheben, ordnend sammeln, sich versammeln, wahrnehmen, erblicken, vorlesen, die Messe lesen und erzählen stand. Die im Germanischen vorherrschende Bedeutung der Wortfamilie, der lesen angehört, ist die des Auflesens und Sammelns. Im Deutschen tritt hierzu noch die Bedeutung des Lesens von Geschriebenem hinzu, was wohl mit dem Einfluss des lateinischen Verbs ' zu begründen ist.
