Seine mittelhochdeutschen Formen lauteten zuker beziehungsweise zucker, die ihrerseits auf die althochdeutsche Form zucker zurückgehen. Ins Deutsche gelang es durch Entlehnung aus dem Italienischen ', welches seinerseits über das Arabische und Persische letztendlich dem Altindischen śárkarā (vergleiche Sanskrit ') entstammt. Die griechische Bezeichnung ' , die auch ins Lateinische in der Form ' übernommen wurde, entstammt unmittelbar dem Indischen.:Der Zuckerrohranbau wurde von den Arabern in Spanien und Sizilien eingeführt. Von Italien aus gelangte dann das Wort mit der Sache in die übrigen europäischen Sprachen.”
