Neuguinea wurde als Nueva Guinea vom spanischen Entdecker Íñigo Ortiz de Retez kreiert, der 1545 die Ähnlichkeit der Einheimischen mit den Einwohnern der Küste Guineas in Afrika feststellte. Der Doppelname des Staates ist nun das Ergebnis einer äußerst komplizierten Verwaltungsstruktur in der Zeit vor der Unabhängigkeit. Der nördliche Teil des Landes gelangte als Deutsch-Neuguinea 1884 unter deutsche Herrschaft. Während des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde er von Australien besetzt. Britisch-Neuguinea, der 1906 in Papua umbenannte Südteil der Insel Neuguinea, wurde zu der Zeit ebenfalls von Australien verwaltet, jedoch blieb es in britischem Besitz. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg erhielt Australien dann offiziell den Auftrag, auch Deutsch-Neuguinea zu verwalten. Die Verwaltungen beider Teile wurden jedoch als völlig unabhängig voneinander angesehen. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg führte man die beiden Gebiete schließlich unter dem Namen Territorium Papua und Neuguinea zusammen, das in der Folgezeit zu Papua-Neuguinea verkürzt wurde.,”
