Aus gemeingermanisch *þeudō bildete sich unter Hinzufügung von -isk altfränkisch *þeodisk (als Gegenwort zu *walhisk „romanisch“), daraus althochdeutsch: thiudisk, theodisk zu diotisc, diutisc = „Sprache des Volkes“ (theoda, im Gegensatz zum Latein) und die in der Schriftsprache deutlich häufiger anzutreffende latinisierte Form theodiscus, davon [1] und [2]; die Substantivierungen Deutsch und Deutsche, und die Zusammensetzung Deutschland.:Aus dem germanischen *þeudō bildete sich auch altnordisch þjōð „Volk“, was in isl. þjóð und fär. tjóð „Nation“ weiter lebt.:Im modernen Isländischen zeigt sich die Entwicklung des Begriffs. Zum Nomen þjóð existiert das Verbum þýða (denominale i-Ableitung; das Ableitungssuffix -i verursacht wie im Dt. Umlaut, hier -jó- > -ý-, was dem dt. Umlaut u > ü entspricht). Es bedeutet 'bedeuten', 'deuten' und auch 'übersetzen'. Hierzu steht im Dt. 'deuten', also 'jemanden etwas verständlich machen'. Þýða/deuten heißt also: dem Volk (etwas) verständlich machen = in die Sprache des Volkes übersetzen (vor allem die Bibel aus dem Lateinischen).”
