Daraus entstand das lateinische , das über das Romanische ins Mittelniederländische gelangte, wo es zu oester wurde. Hieraus entwickelte sich das niederdeutsche ūster, das dann im 16. Jahrhundert ins Hochdeutsche übernommen wurde und sich zu Auster wandelte.
