Im Altsächsischen existierte die Form skenkian, im Altenglischen gab es ', das Mittelniederländische kannte scenken und im Niederländischen benutzt man '. Verwandte Wörter in der deutschen Sprache sind Schenkel, Schinken und hinken. Das Einschenken eines Getränks dürfte die Ursprungsbedeutung des Verbs gewesen sein. Die althochdeutschen, altsächsischen und altenglischen Wörter hatten ausschließlich diese Bedeutung, wobei sie im eigentlichen Sinne für ‚das Gefäß schief halten‘ gestanden haben. Erst im Spätmittelhochdeutschen entstand die heute am weitesten verbreitete Bedeutung des Hingebens eines Geschenkes aus dem auch im Ausschenken enthaltenen Darreichen.”
