Der Name ist angelehnt an Sixt Beckmesser, einen der zwölf Alten Meister der Nürnberger Meistersinger. Wagner wollte wohl mit dieser Figur den einflussreichen Wiener Musikkritiker Eduard Hanslick karikieren, der seine Werke oft negativ bewertet hatte.
