lemon:value deu “Das Adjektiv jäh stammt vom althochdeutschen gāhi (voreilig, hastig) und den mittelhochdeutschen Wörtern gāch, gā und gæhe (schnell, jähzornig) ab. Seit dem 15. Jahrhundert existiert bei diesen Formen der mundartlich begründete j-Anlaut, der beim ebenfalls verwandten mittelniederländischen gā und dem niederländischen ' fehlt. Wie jäh fürderhin insbesondere an außergermanische Formen anzuknüpfen ist, ist ungeklärt, weshalb seine weitere Etymologie nicht mit Sicherheit bestimmt werden kann. Hierzu gibt es mehrere Theorien: Einmal wird erwogen, dass das Adjektiv auf eine präfigierte althochdeutsche Ausgangsform *ga-āhi und somit auf das indoeuropäische *ēku- (schnell) zurückgehen könne. Daneben wird überlegt, ob jäh mit *ghenk-, einer Variante des indoeuropäischen *ĝhengh- (schreiten, Schritt), in Verbindung steht. Schließlich gibt es noch den Ansatz, das Wort an die indoeuropäische Wurzel *ĝhē̌i- (antreiben) anzuschließen.”
