In der Folgezeit bilden sich noch einige andere orthografische Varianten heraus wie Blankenn, Planckhen, Blanncken, Planckhenn, Planngkhen oder Blanggen. Der Ortsname ist wahrscheinlich vom romanischen plaunca oder planca (Halde, abschüssige Bergweide, steile Alpweide) abgeleitet. Zur Entstehung des Namens dürfte es gekommen sein, als romanischsprachige Menschen aus Schaan und Vaduz die heutige Gemeindefläche rodeten und das Areal fortan plaunca nannten.
