Das aus dem oberen Isartal stammende Adelsgeschlecht der Schellenberger stellte in vergangenen Zeiten die Herrscher über das Gebiet um den Ort und man benannte diesen kurzerhand nach der Familie. Aus diesem Grund ist Schellenberg der einzige rein deutsche Ortsname in ganz Liechtenstein.
